Heinz Keller

M.Eng, P.Eng., Founder and Senior Consultant

Heinz Keller, the co-founder of Keller Engineering (formerly Suter Keller Inc), holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil/structural engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa. Following his formal education, he embarked on a career as a research engineer and sessional lecturer at Carleton University, concentrating on masonry research and code development. Heinz was among the first individuals in Canada to attain an advanced degree in masonry engineering.

In 1982, he initiated operations as a consulting engineering firm alongside his partner Gary Suter. Initially focusing on research and development in masonry-related building projects and materials testing services, the firm’s specialized work and numerous publications garnered attention and led to consulting opportunities across Canada, the Caribbean, and the USA.

In Canada, the firm conducted extensive masonry research nationwide, contributing significantly to several major publications by CMHC addressing masonry design and building code enhancements. By the late 1980s, the firm actively participated in the early development of Reserve Fund Studies for condominium corporations in Ontario. For many years Heinz was an instructor at the annual condominium director’s course in Ottawa dealing with building condition assessment work and reserve fund studies.

In 1990, Heinz assumed leadership at Keller Engineering, rapidly expanding the team to encompass multi-disciplinary engineering services, including mechanical and electrical engineering. With an augmented array of services, the firm’s consulting endeavors gravitated towards failure investigations and multi-disciplinary building rehabilitation projects, particularly excelling in condition evaluation and reconstruction of building envelopes.

Throughout his career, Heinz has been dedicated to developing innovative, practical, and cost-effective repair solutions, many of which have been implemented in significant building projects. In 2012, Heinz transitioned ownership and management of the firm to a devoted group of engineers who had been integral to the firm’s growth. Since then, Keller Engineering has grown into a successful multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm with offices throughout Canada, specializing in building envelope-related work and major building rehabilitation projects.

Despite being semi-retired, Heinz continues to contribute actively at Keller Engineering as a technical specialist and mentor, offering invaluable expertise and guidance.

Together We Are Protecting People’s Buildings

In July 2023, Keller Engineering achieved a significant milestone by acquiring of Criterium-Jansen Engineers (CJE). This strategic integration that not only signified a union of expertise but also opened new avenues for growth in engineering services, particularly in the vibrant markets of the Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario. We were delighted to welcome CJE as they joined the Keller team, enriching our collective knowledge and capabilities. Particularly noteworthy was the addition of owners Henry and Marilyn Jansen on board, whose leadership and vision aligned with our dedication to excellence and innovation in engineering. Together, we are poised to deliver even greater value to our clients and communities we serve.
