Position Title: Structural Project Lead

Department: Building Envelope Architectural Design (BEAD)

Reports To: Team Lead / Branch Manager

Position Description 

The Structural Engineer is responsible for overseeing the execution of engineering projects, managing project teams, and ensuring the successful delivery of client-focused solutions. This role bridges high-level project planning and hands-on coordination, balancing technical expertise with leadership and client engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Project Management:
    1. Lead multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to client specifications.
    2. Develop project scopes, timelines, and resource plans in collaboration with stakeholders.
    3. Identify and mitigate project risks, ensuring quality assurance throughout.
    4. Perform structural engineering analysis and design of various structures.
      1. Low-rise buildings conforming to Part 9 (custom homes, subdivision homes, interior renovation)
      2. Low to mid-rise commercial buildings conforming to Part 4.
      3. Design repair of concrete buildings.
      4. Miscellaneous structural engineering (retaining walls, shoring design, floating slab, steel connection shop drawings)
    5. Structural building assessments for low and high-rise buildings.
    6. Architectural code review of OBC Part 3 & 9
  2. Client Relations:
    1. Serve as the primary point of contact for clients throughout the project lifecycle.
    2. Ensure client satisfaction by understanding their needs and delivering tailored solutions.
    3. Provide regular project updates and manage client expectations.
  3. Technical Oversight:
    1. Review and approve engineering designs, reports, and specifications.
    2. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices.
    3. Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges during project execution.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, or related field. Registered with as Professional Engineer in good standing, or in the process of obtaining P. Eng. license within one year.
  • Experience: 3-6 years in design consultancy.
  • Must be willing to work at heights, including climbing ladders, operating swing stages, and accessing rooftops
  • Valid Canadian driver’s license.
  • Owning an insured personal vehicle for travel to project sites is required (work related mileage is reimbursed)
  • Skills:
    • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
    • Strong communication skills with a client-focused approach.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
    • Proficiency in project management tools and software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera).
    • Working knowledge of AutoCAD
    • Experience with structural analysis software (e.g. SAFE, ETABS, SAP2000, SkyCiv, Tekla)
    • Experience with wood and concrete design software (e.g. WoodWorks Sizer, Simpson EWP Studio, Simpson Anchor Designer, Hilti Profis)
    • Candidates with strong concrete and steel design experience working on mid to high-rise buildings are preferred.
    • Architectural knowledge of OBC Part 3 & Part 9 is an asset.
    • Knowledge of building and fire codes is an asset.

Schedule / Hours:

  • The Project Lead’s schedule will generally align with the company’s standard hours of 8:00 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday.
  • Due to the nature of the position, the Structural Engineer may occasionally be required to work additional hours, including evenings or weekends, to support critical projects, meet deadlines, or attend business events. These hours are considered part of the Lead’s regular duties.
  • This position is exempt from overtime.
