Saskatoon Tower, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Description:
The Building complex consists of a multi-storey parkade built around 1968 and a plaza deck and 16-storey apartment tower built above the parkade around 1979. The structures were built using post-tensioned concrete construction, except for the conventionally reinforced concrete swimming pool located on the apartment tower plaza deck. Levels 1 and 2 of the parkade have conventional slab-on-grade construction.

Work Performed:
In 1995, extensive repair and maintenance work was implemented at the parkade, plaza deck and apartment tower to ensure the long term serviceability of this building complex. These repairs included:

  • the non-destructive evaluation of all post-tensioning tendons in the parkade and the plaza deck and replacement of 228 tendons which were identified by RIMT® as having failed or being significantly corroded.
  • repairs to the concrete pool and installation of a pool liner
  • installation of waterproofing on balconies, on the plaza deck, and on the parkade slabs
  • installation of an acrylic coating on all exposed concrete wall surfaces and balcony soffits.
  •
