Constructed in early 1970, the Denbury is a 12-storey
structure built in reinforced concrete with exterior walls consisting
of 6" TTW bricks, parging, 1-1/2" rigid insulation and
1/2" drywall. The brick masonry walls are supported at each
floor level with a thin section of masonry covering the face of
the floor slabs. Some brick masonry cracking had occurred over the
years and minor repairs were carried out, particularly at the roof
level and at some floor slabs. In June 1991, the bottom two storeys
of a section of wall on the east elevation collapsed suddenly and
prompted an investigation into the overall condition and safety
of the brick masonry walls.
A detailed investigation led to a decision to
reconstruct the walls over a two- year span (1992-1993) using state-of-the-art
brick veneer/steel stud technology.
